Owner, trainer Charles Spence dies

Charles G. Spence, a retired Thoroughbred owner, breeder, and trainer, died on March 15 at his home in Anthony, Florida. He was 69.
Spence retired from training in 2001. Since 1984, horses trained by Spence earned 165 wins in 1,541 starts, including four stakes victories, and compiled $953,918 in purse earnings, according to statistics provided by The Jockey Club.
A Flint, Michigan, native, Spence trained three horses that were stakes winners at Detroit Race Course. They included Gustofair, winner of the $125,000 Michigan Sire Stakes in 1991, multiple stakes winner Sticker Price, and stakes winner Kaintuck J. R.
A memorial service beginning at 5 p.m. EDT will be held on Thursday at Unity Baptist Church in Anthony. Memorial contributions may be made to the Unity Baptist Church building fund or Hospice of Marion County. Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home in Ocala is handling the arrangements.
