Racing to continue at Fort Erie

Posted: Thursday, March 12, 2009 3:52 PM

by Perry Lefko

A three-party consortium consisting of the Township of Fort Erie, the Fort Erie Economic Development and Tourism Corp., and the Ontario Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association has put together a letter of intent to buy Fort Erie from Nordic Gaming Corporation for $35-million.

The group, which will operate as the Fort Erie Racing Thoroughbred Consortium Group, revealed its plan on Thursday in Fort Erie to rescue the financially-troubled track.

Nordic claims to have lost between $3-million and $4-million each of the last four years due to competition from nearby casinos on both sides of the Niagara Falls border.

The newly formed group has forwarded a non-refundable deposit of $2.25-million to Nordic that consists of $1.5-million from the EDTC, $500,000 from the HBPA, and $250,000 from the Township.

The consortium has 90 days to develop a business plan and find funding from a lending institution or the provincial government.

"The reason it's $35-million is you've got to have a willing seller and a willing buyer, and that's what we've come to," said EDTC general manager Jim Thibert, who crafted the deal. "It's a $35-million offer against an operating business. That's why we're running this year.

“We're not subsidizing operations. No money is going into this to support Nordic Gaming and their losses. This is a capital venture we've engaged with. If we can buy the track, we get a discount of the purchase price if we move forward."

The track’s 78-day live race calendar begins on May 2 with virtually the same purse levels as last year. Nordic will guarantee racing for the entire season.

“Nordic is very pleased that all the stakeholders have been able to come up with a solution that will enable live racing this season,” owner representative Stephen Ayers said in a statement. “As in the past, we will continue to support the track and the wonderful people who make the operation work.”

Sue Leslie, president of the Ontario HBPA and the chairman of the consortium, expressed hope with the latest developments but stressed that the horsemen have to help.

"It's imperative we have good, sound racecards and large fields so that we can increase the wagering dollars, both to our purse account and to the racetrack operator because this is going to be the surest way to give long-term stability to the Fort Erie Racetrack and to enable all us who have been working so hard to find a permanent solution to get there," she said.
