Block has stranglehold on Illinois-bred honors

For the third time in seven years, the Illinois-bred Horse of the Year resides in the barn of trainer Chris Block.

The Illinois Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Foundation bestowed its highest honor for 2008 on Team Block’s homebred Amazing Results, who won four of eight starts, including three stakes. The Grand Slam colt also finished second by a neck to Hatta Fort (GB) in the Perryville Stakes (G3) at Keeneland Race Course and earned $219,336 on the campaign.

Team Block bred Amazing Results out of their Lord At War (Arg) mare Ioya Two, a Grade 3 winner whose half brother, the Grade 2 winner Mystery Giver, won Illinois Horse of the Year honors in 2002 and ’04 for Team Block. The other recent Illinois Horse of the Year for the family is Fort Prado from 2006.

Team Block consists of trainer, Chris, his parents, David and Patricia, and his brothers, sisters, and their families. Amazing Results also earned champion three-year-old male and champion male turf horse honors.

Chris Block also trained two-year-old male champion Giant Oak, though that Giant’s Causeway colt is a Virginia H. Tarra Trust homebred. Giant Oak’s full sister, Apple Martini, earned three-year-old filly honors with Anthony Reinstedler, Block, and Neil Pessin all training the filly at some point in 2008.

Along with Amazing Results, High Expectations was the other multiple champion, as he took honors as handicap male and male sprinter.

Rolling Sea, the 2007 Horse of the Year and champion older handicap female, defended her filly and mare title in the handicap division.

The other champions were Happy Henrietta as two-year-old filly, You Dancing Devil for female turf, and Nicks as female sprinter.
