THOROUGHBRED TIMES names
diverse group to Ten to Watch list

Posted: Wednesday, June 24, 2009 4:00 PM

by Tom Law

The editors and writers of THOROUGHBRED TIMES selected individuals from many segments of the industry, from breeders to owners and sales company executives to racetrack officials, for the publication’s “Industry Leaders: Ten to Watch” feature that appears in the June 27 issue.

The Ten to Watch feature, which has appeared annually since 1995, profiles up-and-comers who might be new or unknown to the industry.

The 2009 Ten to Watch list includes a pair of individuals heavily involved in racing technology in Betfair’s David Yu and Todd Roberts of the Roberts Communication Network.

Owners frequently appear on the Ten to Watch list, and 2009 is no exception. Mike Repole, who is off to a quick start in his relatively short tenure in racing; and Westrock Stables, the father-son team of Joe and Scott Ford, made this year’s list.

Three of the ten spots—involving four people—were taken by horsemen in the form of trainers Tim Ice and Chad Brown and the twin-brother jockey duo of Matthew and Michael Straight.

Oliver Tait, an Australian who worked for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s worldwide Darley breeding operation in his native country and in Japan before assuming a lead role with Darley USA; Dan Silver, the 29-year-old director of communications for the New York Racing Association; and Travis Stone, the track announcer at Louisiana Downs, round out the list for 2009.

A complete list of the 2009 Ten to Watch is below.
