Casino money headed for Illinois tracks

The United States Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal on behalf of four Illinois riverboat casinos that challenged a state law forcing them to pay a subsidy to Illinois racetracks affected by the legalization of casino gambling.

The money totals just under $80-million, according to Marc Laino, executive director of the Illinois Racing Board, and has been held in escrow while the court battle played out.

Provided certification is forwarded from the U.S. Supreme Court to the Illinois Supreme Court in time, the Illinois Racing Board is expected to take up the question of how to disperse the money at its July 14 meeting, Laino said.

The money will be divided between Illinois’ harness (43%) and Thoroughbred tracks (57%), with 60% going to purses and 40% to the tracks, according to Daily Racing Form.

The original subsidy was extended last fall, and that already has produced more than $10-million. That money also is being held in escrow because the casinos filed another lawsuit challenging the extension. The Illinois horse industry expects another victory based on the latest ruling.
