With the track's signature race scheduled for Saturday, a new signature facility, the Ruffian Equine Medical Center, celebrated its opening on Thursday.

The state-of-the-art equine hospital is located opposite the backstretch of Belmont Park and celebrates 1975 Filly Triple Crown winner Ruffian, who broke down in a 1975 match race with Foolish Pleasure at Belmont Park.

Michael Iavarone, of Thoroughbred owner IEAH Stables, started thinking about backing a center when he noticed that injured horses in the stable usually were sent to Kentucky. James Hunt, DVM, told Iavarone horses were sent to Kentucky because New York lacked such a facility.

"Dr. Hunt challenged us. We committed to backing this financially and he committed to operating it," Iavarone said. "I've had a lot of ups and downs in racing, this is certainly one of the biggest ups."

Hunt will own and operate REMC while Patricia Hogan, VMD, will serve as chief surgeon. Hogan, well known for her work with Smarty Jones, said Ruffian's story inspired her to take up equine veterinary work. She said the $18-million facility will add to equine welfare in New York.

"There is a tremendous interest in equine health and welfare issues right now from the general public," Hogan said, thanking IEAH. "There are plenty of things they could have spent $18-million on—they didn't have to build an equine hospital—so we're very thankful."

The center will act as a hub for horses of all breeds and disciplines, specializing as a center for diagnostics and orthopedic surgery. It one day could be expanded to include research.

“Long Island has never had a facility of this scale,” Hunt said. “It's overdue considering the population of horses in the area. We're thrilled to be able to provide the best services we can to the horse owners, their trainers and their veterinarians.”

Planning for the REMC commenced in 2003. The hospital was designed by British Architect and IEAH Director John Roberts to the specific requirements of Doctors Hunt and Hogan.

The medical center includes more than 22,000 square feet of space and includes two surgery suites, three recovery stalls, computed tomography, a high-speed equine treadmill, digital radiography with an overhead high-power generator, nuclear scintigraphy, a full-service laboratory, a lameness strip and outdoor lunging ring, three climate-controlled stalls, and 26 standard stalls in the barn.
