Santa Anita fixture Logan dies at 98

Eddie Logan, the shoeshine attendant at Santa Anita Park since the track's opening day on December 25, 1934, died on Saturday. He was 98.

Logan, born on May 20, 1910, was a beloved figure at the Arcadia, California, track and was known for his wit, smile, and work ethic.

"Eddie was here from the start," Santa Anita President Ron Charles said. "I know this may sound predictable, but truly, Santa Anita will never be the same without him. He was an inspiration to all of us, and I personally feel that my life has been enriched by having known him all these years."

A former boxer, Negro League baseball player, and self-described "footman", Logan serviced Racing Hall of Fame jockeys Eddie Arcaro, John Longden, Bill Shoemaker, Laffit Pincay, and Chris McCarron.

Santa Anita honored him with the Eddie Logan Stakes on December 27.

"Over the years, Eddie became a great friend," Racing Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella said. "Our friendship was partly due to the admiration I had for him ... to be operating his shoeshine stand as he did for all those years was remarkable.

"He had that great sense of humor and he'd make you laugh. He’s talk about his days with the Kansas City Monarchs, and he was just so full of life. ... I hope Santa Anita maintains his shoeshine stand forever, he was one of a kind."

Funeral arrangements for Logan are pending.
