Sheikh Mohammed donates
to Markey Cancer Foundation

Posted: Friday, January 30, 2009 3:46 PM

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum has donated $2-million to the Markey Cancer Foundation in Lexington.

Sheikh Mohammed made the gift through his worldwide breeding operation, Darley Stud Management.

In recognition of the donation, the center’s blood and marrow transplant unit will be named the Darley Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, which will retain the name when the unit moves to the new University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital, set to open in stages in 2010.

“This donation is reflective of Sheikh Mohammed’s desire to assist further technological advances in cancer treatments,” said Jimmy Bell, president of Darley USA. “He is delighted to participate in the new state-of the-art UK Chandler Hospital that will serve so many Kentuckians now and in the future.”

The gift will help the unit reach its long-term goals.

“Through the generosity of Darley and Sheikh Mohammed, the Markey Cancer Center will be able to build on efforts to provide a top-notch blood and marrow transplant program in world-class facilities,” said foundation President Randall G. Rowland.
