Stardom Bound burst on the national scene in her third start, while still a maiden, when she won the Del Mar Debutante Stakes (G1) with a stunning move from far back to win going away.
That style became her trademark as she would spot the field numerous lengths at the start and then easily run by her rivals in the stretch.
The gray or roan Tapit filly followed with a triumph in the Oak Leaf Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park, and administered the coup de grace a month later when she throttled 12 rivals in the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).
Due to health concerns, trainer Christopher Paasch will be getting out of training this year and will work as an agent, buying horses for clients. Paasch has successfully battled histiocytosis X, a disease in which immune cells attack the body rather than fight infections, destroying cells.
Owner Charles Cono, who also is battling health issues, is getting out of racing altogether. As part of the process, he sold Stardom Bound for $5.7-million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky selected fall mixed sale. Purchased by IEAH Stables, the filly is with Bobby Frankel and is training for an expected sophomore debut in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) on February 7 at Santa Anita.
“No regrets,” Paasch said of losing the filly. “I hope Bobby wins ten straight with her and she goes down as one of the best fillies ever to step on a racetrack.”
