American Idol focuses on Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs figures to get plenty of positive exposure when FOX’s ratings juggernaut “American Idol” turns its focus to the Louisville track during Wednesday’s program.

Taped in September, the auditions are one of several regional tryout episodes featured on the eighth season of the show, which typically draws high ratings. Churchill Downs welcomed judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Kara DioGuardi, and Randy Jackson to the Turf Club to conduct evaluations of the Louisville performers.

The show airs at 8 p.m. EST Wednesday on FOX.

“Obviously this is one of the things that our renovations allow us to do, along the lines of the concerts we’ve had here with the Police and the Rolling Stones,” said Churchill spokesman John Asher. “It’s going to provide significant exposure to a lot of people who don’t typically get exposure to Churchill Downs or horse racing. It should help put Churchill Downs, and the sport in general, in the minds of a lot of people.”

In a quick preview of tonight’s episode, American Idol showed horses starting from the Churchill gate, judges seated in a suite, and contestants walking through the plush halls of the Churchill facility. Behind the judges is a large glass window in which the track and its infield are prominent.

Asher said security was tight during show taping, as producers try to keep storylines from leaking. Tonight, those storylines will unfold.

“It’s such a high-profile show with a huge audience,” Asher said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

This year’s American Idol season premiere drew 30.1-million viewers for ratings more than triple the amount of recent Kentucky Derby (G1) broadcasts on NBC.

In Louisville, about 11,000 people initially auditioned in June at Freedom Hall before 300 finalists returned for a second round in September at Churchill. The judges will select a handful of singers to advance to Hollywood, California, for another round of auditions.
