Fort Erie development group offers to buy racetrack

The Fort Erie Economic Development and Tourism Corp. announced plans on Tuesday to buy Fort Erie from its current owner, Nordic Gaming Corp., for $35-million.

The plan calls for the EDTC, which is an agency of the town of Fort Erie, to purchase the track and run it as a not-for-profit corporation. The provincial government is being asked to underwrite the financing, using the track, which a month ago had a land appraisal value of $21-million, as collateral.

EDTC General Manager Jim Thibert, who orchestrated the deal, said a decision needs to be made by the government no later than January 29 because the Ontario Racing Commission will not allow extend Nordic’s gaming license beyond that date. Nordic conditionally has applied for 78 race dates this year, but only on the proviso it receives financial assistance.

Nordic claims to have lost between $3-million and $4-million in each of the last four years because of competition from nearby casinos on both sides of the Niagara Falls border.

The EDTC made the offer to El-Ad Group, the parent company of Nordic, on Monday.

“We have received [an offer] from the town and are now looking at it,” Nordic spokesman Stephen Ayers said. “I cannot comment further, but I can tell you that should we fail to receive funding one way or the other to cover operational losses this year, we shall announce that there will be no live racing in 2009.”

Thibert is hoping the province will see the value in backstopping the project. Despite repeated lobbying during the past 18 months by the Member of Provincial Parliament for Niagara Falls, the government has been unwilling to provide financial assistance.

The track has existed in the town of about 30,000 for 111 years and has been the site of the Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown since its creation in 1958.
