Owner, breeder Marjorie Cowan dies

Posted: Thursday, February 19, 2009 10:50 AM

Marjorie Cowan, who bred and raced champion Hollywood Wildcat and several other Grade 1 winners with her husband, Irving, died on Tuesday in Hollywood, Florida. She was 68.

Hollywood Wildcat, by Kris S., earned champion three-year-old filly honors in 1993 after defeating Paseana (Arg) by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Santa Anita Park. When Hollywood Wildcat’s son, War Chant, prevailed in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), she joined Personal Ensign as the only Distaff winners to produce Breeders’ Cup winners.

War Chant stands at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky.

The Cowans bred and raced several other graded or group stakes winners who are now at stud throughout the world: French Deputy in Japan, Ivan Denisovich (Ire) in Ireland, Sea of Secrets in California, and Fappie’s Notebook in Illinois.

The Cowans also were the breeders and owners of three-time Grade 1 winner Society Selection, a Coronado’s Quest mare out of their homebred Grade 3 winner Love That Jazz, the runner-up to Storm Song in the 1996 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Marjorie Cowan’s family owned the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood for several decades. She is survived by her husband, daughters Debra and Cynthia, and son Jonathan.
