Owner Gorske-White, mother of jockey Cheryl White, dies

Posted: Tuesday, February 03, 2009 11:34 AM

Doris Gorske-White, a former owner in the Midwest and the mother of former jockey Cheryl White, died on January 20 of congestive heart failure in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was 78.

Gorske-White ran horses in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, most of which were trained by her husband, Raymond White, a successful owner and trainer on the Ohio and Kentucky circuits in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Cheryl White was considered a pioneer of her time, the country’s first prominent female African-American jockey.

Gorske-White is survived by her daughter, Cheryl; a son, Raymond; and three grandchildren.
