Newsmakers of the Year No. 2: Chilly economy

At this year’s Thoroughbred Club of America testimonial dinner, Honor Guest Catesby Clay encouraged the 200 industry leaders assembled to work through the tough times.

The 86-year-old owner of Runnymede Farm acknowledged the current economy has taken a toll on the horse industry, which saw further drops in wagering handle, racing purses, sale prices, stallion fees, and breeding activity in 2009.

“Having seen the past, I have confidence in the future—and I believe our best days lie ahead,” Clay said.

The encouraging words were needed after a second consecutive difficult year:

U.S. racing handle is on pace to drop 10% compared with last year to about $12.28-billion. It would mark the second straight year that handle has fallen by more than $1-billion.

Purses are on pace to decline about 5.75% to $1.09-billion, a figure comparable with 2005.

With sale prices declining, many farms reduced stallion fees. Breeding activity also is down as the projected foal numbers for 2009 is the lowest since 1979.
