Newsmakers of the Year No. 3: Magna bankruptcy

As part of its Chapter 11 restructuring, Magna reached agreements to sell Remington Park, Lone Star Park, and Thistledown but sales of the latter two could fall through.

A Chickasaw Nation subsidiary purchased Remington for $80.25-million, but Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. could back out of its $89.5-million Thistledown purchase after an Ohio court blocked adding video lottery terminals. The bankruptcy judge voided a Chickasaw subsidiary’s $27-million bid on Lone Star after creditors argued Penn National Gaming could increase the price to $40-million.

Going forward, Magna Entertainment parent company MI Developments appears poised to bid on crown jewels Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park, and the Maryland Jockey Club. Thoroughbred owner and breeder Frank Stronach controls both companies.
