Newsmakers of the Year No. 4: Triple Crown

Mine That Bird’s upset victory in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) landed him on the Sports Illustrated cover but this year’s Triple Crown offered plenty more.

After purchasing Rachel Alexandra after her Kentucky Oaks (G1) victory, new owners Jess Jackson and Harold T. McCormick and trainer Steve Asmussen entered the filly in the BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (G1), where she won, holding off Mine That Bird.

Popular jockey Calvin Borel was aboard the first two classic winners but could not complete the “Calvin Crown” when Mine That Bird finished third in the Belmont Stakes (G1) behind winner Summer Bird.

All three Triple Crown winners are by second-crop sires as Mine That Bird and Summer Bird are by Birdstone and Rachel Alexandra is by Medaglia d’Oro.
