The 2009 racing season was marred by the death of one rider and serious injuries to two others.

Rene Douglas, who won the 1996 Belmont Stakes (G1) aboard Editor’s Note, and up-and-coming rider Michael Straight both suffered paralysis after spills at Arlington Park this year.

Jockey Mark Pace, 58, died in a fall at Blue Ribbon Downs.
