Donald I. Rudder, a longtime Thoroughbred owner and breeder who founded the National Association of Thoroughbred Owners, died on Wednesday in Hobe Sound, Florida, following a brief hospital stay. He was 84.
Rudder and his wife, Anne, campaigned their horses under the Rudlein Stable moniker. They owned Will’s Way, the winner of the 1996 Travers Stakes (G1) and ’97 Whitney Handicap (G1).
The Rudders were the owners and breeders of Grade 3 winner Mr. Groush, and were the breeders of stakes winner Subtle Dancer. The Rudders and William Clifton Jr. were co-owners of Grade 1 winner Behrens and multiple Grade 3 winner Ok by Me.
Rudder and his wife were partners in EQUIX Biomechanics for many years prior to the dissolution of a partnership, after which they formed Date Track International.
No funeral service will be held.
Condolence cards can be sent to Anne Rudder at P.O. Box 726, Hobe Sound, Florida, 33475.
