Wiggins wins Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners award

Trainer Hal Wiggins will be honored on Saturday as the Warner J. Jones Jr. Horseman of the Year, an award the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners presents annually.

Wiggins, 66, will be honored for training Rachel Alexandra. Wiggins saddled the three-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly to a 20 1/4-length victory in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on May 1 at Churchill Downs. Wiggins conditioned Rachel Alexandra for owners L and M Stables and breeder Dolphus Morrison before Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables acquired the filly in partnership with Harold T. McCormick following her Oaks victory.

Wiggins plans to retire at the end of Churchill’s fall meet on November 28.

The award, given annually since 1989, honors a member of the racing industry who displays the spirit and passion for the sport demonstrated by the late Warner J. Jones Jr., the former chairman of the board of Churchill Downs.

The award ceremony will take place during the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owner’s 21st annual awards dinner at 6 p.m. at the Big Spring Country Club in Louisville.
