Penn National increases purses

Penn National Race Course increased purses on June 11 to a daily average of $170,000, a record for the Grantville, Pennsylvania, track.

Thanks largely to added gaming at the track’s Hollywood Casino, the track says purses are up 30% compared with the same period in 2008. That has helped attract larger fields, which has helped increase wagering on Penn National races by 40%.

“One of the major forces in making our program grow is field size,” Director of Racing Rob Marella said, noting that the tracks average field size has improved to 9.3 a race.
