Kentucky’s chief vet resigns

Posted: Friday, September 26, 2008 4:36 PM

by Frank Angst

Just days after fielding questions about not conducting TCO2 tests on horses racing at the Ellis Park meeting, Kentucky Chief State Veterinarian Lafe Nichols resigned from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Nichols turned in his resignation on Friday morning. Jim Carroll, spokesman for the state, said Nichols did not provide a reason for stepping down.

Nichols said a lack of staff resulted in bicarbonate testing not being conducted at the 39-day summer meeting in Henderson, Kentucky. He was asked about the issue by Commissioner Elizabeth Lavin at Monday’s meeting of the Commission.

On Friday the commission’s executive director, Lisa Underwood, said Equine Medical Director Mary Scollay, D.V.M. will assume oversight of regulatory veterinary operations until an interim chief racing veterinarian is appointed. Underwood said that appointment could come as early as mid-October and that the commission would conduct a national search for a permanent replacement.

Nichols did not immediately return a phone call from Thoroughbred Times to ask about the reasons for his resignation. At Monday’s commission meeting he said the three veterinarians available at Ellis Park were needed in a protocol to prevent equine heat exhaustion at the track.

“It was a matter of personnel and timing,” said Nichols, who noted emphasis was placed on operating the equine ambulance and observing horses for possible heat stress.

Nichols said conducting TCO2 testing would have taken one veterinarian out of those safety positions. At Turfway Park, the state has four veterinarians available and Nichols said TCO2 testing was conducted during the first week of that meet.

Nichols was appointed to the position in April 2007 following the retirement of Nancy Davis, D.V.M. In 1985, Nichols established the Veterinary Medical Center of Henderson.
