Owner Siegel donates $100,000 to THG

With a $100,000 donation, Thoroughbred owner Mace Siegel showed his support for a horsemen’s group seeking an increased share of the advance-deposit wagering pie.

Siegel, who also is a founder of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, donated the money to the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Group on Thursday.

“No individual horseman has been more concerned about the rates of return for the industry than Mace Siegel,” said Thoroughbred Owners of California President Drew Couto. “He became a huge supporter of the idea that it was a shared responsibility among horsemen and racetracks that we create a modern model for ADW and other simulcast issues. When the THG was created, he was extremely interested in it succeeding.”

Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Group President Bob Reeves said his group has no immediate plans for the donation and will place the money in the bank. The group’s only paid employee is manager Wilson Shirley. Other expenses include travel expenses and legal fees as the group is named in a lawsuit filed by Churchill Downs Inc. Reeves said the group is considering starting a management information system.

“We told Mace that we don’t need the money now and maybe he should save it for a rainy day but he felt strongly about this,” Reeves said. “He also wanted people to know about his support of our work so he encouraged us to publicize it. … This sends a signal and there’s more on the way.”

Mace and his daughter Samantha campaign horses as Jay Em Ess Stable. Some of their top horses include Declan’s Moon, Urbane, Hedonist, and Arson Squad.

Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Group works with horsemen in 18 states pursuing an ADW model that commits one-third of revenue to purses.

“Mace’s leadership with the formation of Thoroughbred Owners of California, and the example he has set as an advocate for the rights of Thoroughbred owners, is an inspiration to all owners in our sport,” Reeves said. “The Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Group is another step on a national basis to protect the rights of Thoroughbred owners and the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing.”
