Belmont barn placed under quarantine

Barn 38 at Belmont Park was quarantined on Saturday after Smell My Carrots, a three-year-old A. P Jet gelding, was euthanized after being found with a fever and unable to stand in his stall on the Belmont Park backstretch, said Anthony Verderosa, D.V.M., the New York Racing Association's chief examining veterinarian.

Equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) has been listed as a possible cause of the horse's illness.

Blood samples from Smell My Carrots were sent to a laboratory in Kentucky and results are expected Tuesday.

Horses stabled in Barn 38 will not be allowed to race or ship out until further notice. They will be allowed to train away from the rest of the horse population on the Belmont Park training track after normal training hours.

John Candlin, the trainer of Smell My Carrots, shares Barn 38 with several other trainers. The gelding was scratched from the seventh race on Friday at Belmont.
