Saratoga experiences decline in attendance, handle

Saratoga Race Course posted declines in attendance, on-track handle, and all-sources handle for its summer meeting, the Saratoga Springs, New York, track announced on Friday.

Attendance for the 2008 meeting declined 9% compared with last year. Saratoga had 872,627 patrons this year, down from 958,574 last year.

On-track handle fell from $123,018,042 last year to $114,563,754 for the 2008 meeting, a decline of 6.9%.

All-sources handle fell 10.3% as revenue dropped from $582,656,105 in 2007 to $522,530,643 this season.

“Our business improved when the weather improved, and the 140th Spa meeting once again combined the highest quality Thoroughbred racing and the strongest wagering opportunities in North America, New York Racing Association President Charles Hayward said.

The number of races contested increased from 347 to 359 compared with last year. There was a 1.8% decline in total betting interests compared with last year, mostly because of inclement weather.

There was also a 14% decline in the number of turf races held during the meeting. There were 141 races, including seven steeplechase events, this year compared with 164 races on the grass in 2007.
