All-source Breeders’ Cup handle increases 5.5%

Posted: Sunday, October 26, 2008 6:43 PM

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships brought in $155,474,553.23 of all-source handle for its two-day event at the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita Park, a 5.5% increase compared with the $147,381,170 wagered on last year’s event at Monmouth Park.

This year’s all-source handle includes a separate pool estimate of $5-million from wagering in Hong Kong, France, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Australia.

“We are very pleased with the enthusiastic response from racing fans at Santa Anita Park and around the world for this year’s World Championships,” Breeders’ Cup President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Avioli said. “We thank our outstanding host, the Oak Tree Racing Association, for providing an excellent presentation of the Championships, and look forward to our return here next year.”

On-track wagering for Friday’s Breeders’ Cup races was $6,852,096.40 while Saturday’s nine races brought in $11,832,983.60.

An on-track crowd of 51,331 attended the Breeders' Cup races on Saturday, a 22.9% increase compared with the 41,781 fans who showed up for Breeders' Cup Saturday last year in the rain at Monmouth Park.

Attendance on Friday at Santa Anita was 31,527, up 13.4% from the comparable day in 2007 at Monmouth.
