Quarantine lifted on Laurel barn

Posted: Wednesday, November 26, 2008 11:35 AM

The Maryland Department of Agriculture lifted its animal investigational hold order on the Laurel Park barn of trainer King Leatherbury on Wednesday after all 25 horses there tested negative for equine herpesvirus (EHV-1).

Barn 1 at the track had been quarantined since November 12 after a two-year-old filly, Nin, was diagnosed with the illness and subsequently euthanized three days later. The outbreak prevented any horses from entering or exiting Leatherbury’s barn and led the Maryland Jockey Club to prohibit runners from shipping to Laurel from nearby farms or out-of-state tracks to race. Only horses based at the Bowie Training Center were permitted from outside the grounds.

“We just finished inspecting the horses and issued a release order,” State Veterinarian Guy Hohenhaus said Wednesday morning at Laurel Park. “Everything checked out fine.”

The hold order initially was for 21 days, but Hohenhaus said the Maryland Department of Agriculture reserved the right to “amend, adjust, reduce, or extend it.”

"It is a positive to put the situation behind us," said Tom Chuckas, Maryland Jockey Club president and chief operating officer. "We would like to thank the [Maryland Department of Agriculture], especially Danny Mast and Marla Stevens, for their hard work and long hours enabling us to get through this whole ordeal quickly and smoothly."

Upon the announcement, Laurel Park racing secretary Georganne Hale immediately opened the entry box to horses from out of state.

“We’re free,” said Leatherbury. “Only 14 days, which wasn’t bad under the circumstances. All the horses tested negatively. They took a walk through my barn this morning, and everything checked out good.”

Leatherbury said he planned to ship two turf horses to the farm for the winter Wednesday and then put the rest of his runners back in training.

“We’ll be a couple weeks before we hit the entry box,” he said.
