Churchill unveils 2009 Art of the Kentucky Derby

Posted: Saturday, November 01, 2008 4:58 PM

A painting that depicts horse racing under the shadows of the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs was unveiled on Saturday as the 2009 Art of the Kentucky Derby series that celebrates the 135th renewals of the Kentucky Derby (G1) and the Kentucky Oaks (G1).

Atlanta-based artist Jeff Williams created the painting, which captures the pageantry of Millionaires Row as six Thoroughbreds charge toward the finish. The painting will appear on posters, prints, tickets, racing programs, and officially licensed products for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and Oaks.

Churchill also debuted two featured hats depicted in the painting. The Kentucky Derby and Oaks hats were created by Christine Moore and will auctioned off in spring 2009, with proceeds to benefit local charities.

Art of the Kentucky Derby merchandise may be purchased at www.kentuckyderby.com/store. Officially licensed Art of the Kentucky Derby merchandise is also available at The Churchill Store at Churchill Downs through the conclusion of the track’s fall meet on November 29 and at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Churchill also unveiled the official logos for the 2009 Kentucky Derby and Oaks. The logos will adorn all officially licensed merchandise.

The Kentucky Derby logo features two sides of a golden horseshoe joined at the bottom by a red rose. The words “Kentucky Derby” are printed in the center of the horseshoe in gold and black font along with the number “135” to designate the 135th running of the race. The words “Churchill Downs” and “May 2, 2009” appear beneath the horseshoe.

A golden horseshoe also tops the Oaks logo, which also includes a pink lily popping out of the center of the horseshoe. The words “Kentucky Oaks 135” and “Churchill Downs—May 1, 2009” are emblazoned in bright pink and gold text beneath the primary artwork.

Churchill also introduced nondated versions of both logos that are similar in color and design to the dated versions. Both nondated logos feature a golden horseshoe with signature flowers associated with each race—a red rose for the Kentucky Derby and a pink stargazer lily for the Oaks.
