NYRA photographer Benson dies

Brandon Benson, who won the Jerry Frutkoff Preakness Photography Award at the Alibi Breakfast on May 15, died on May 22.

The 21-year-old photographer's work appeared frequently in THOROUGHBRED TIMES.

Benson's aunt Deborah Kral, who also is an equine photographer, said she cannot remember when Benson first became interested in photography but that she helped him get started.

"I gave him his first camera, which was given to me as a hand-me-down," Kral said. "Once he had that camera in his hand, there was no turning back."

Benson, a lifelong resident of Millbrook, New York, assisted New York Racing Association track photographer Adam Coglianese. His work has been featured in THOROUGHBRED TIMES, Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred (for which he won the Frutkoff Award), Daily Racing Form, the Blood Horse, and in the 2002 novel My Racing Heart by Nan Mooney.

As a youth, he was a member of the organization Kids to the Cup, a group whose mission included sending children interested in Thoroughbred racing to see the Breeders' Cup races.

Plans to honor Benson with a memorial service during Belmont Stakes (G1) week have not yet been finalized.
