Ronald Chak, breeder of Peace Rules, dead at 70

Ronald Chak, D.V.M., breeder of Grade 1 winners Mister Frisky and Peace Rules in the name of his Newchance Farm, died on Saturday. He was 70.
Chak moved to Ocala in the 1960s after receiving his degree in veterinary medicine from Auburn University. He was the resident veterinarian at Ocala Stud Farm before eventually beginning his own veterinary practice.
Chak established his Newchance Farm in 1967 and went on to breed more than two dozen stakes winners.
Mister Frisky, by Marsayas out of the Highest Tide mare Frisky Flyer, was named 1989 Puerto Rican Horse of the Year and champion imported two-year-old male after winning each of his 12 starts.
Sent to North America the following year, Mister Frisky won the San Vicente Breeders’ Cup Stakes, San Rafael Stakes (G2), and Santa Anita Derby (G1). Counting his wins in Puerto Rico, Mister Frisky tied Citation’s record for 16 straight wins.
Sent off as the 1.90-to-1 favorite in the 1990 Kentucky Derby (G1), Mister Frisky finished eighth to fellow Florida-bred Unbridled. He was third in the Preakness Stakes (G1) before a life-threatening abscess was discovered in his esophagus. He retired with earnings of $689,393 and last stood in Australia.
Peace Rules, by Jules out of the Hold Your Peace mare Hold to Fashion, won the Louisiana Derby (G2) and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) before finishing third in the 2003 Kentucky Derby (G1). He subsequently won the Haskell Invitational Handicap (G1) and the 2004 Suburban Handicap (G1).
Peace Rules was named 2003 Florida-bred horse of the year and earned $3,084,278. He stands at Vinery Stud in Summerfield, Florida.
In addition to Peace Rules and Mister Frisky, Chak also bred graded stakes winners Sunny Blossom and Run Turn.
Survivors include his ex-wife Phyllis; sons, Mark and Roger; daughters, Paula Raney and Tamara Hoffner; mother, Blanche Chak; sisters, Brenda Lefkoff and Barbara Schwartz; and eight grandchildren.
