Multiple Grade 1 winner Lawyer Ron faced an uncertain future entering his 2007 season but concluded his racing career with an Eclipse Award as champion older male.
The five-year-old Langfuhr horse out of Donation, by Lord Avie, edged finalists Invasor (Arg) and Corinthian after winning four of his eight starts and compiling $1,320,000 in purse earnings in 2007, a year in which he just as easily could have been sent to the breeding shed.
Lawyer Ron’s final season included a victory in the Whitney Handicap (G1), in which he set a track record at Saratoga Race Course by running 1 1⁄8 miles in 1:46.64.
“The thing that really stands out is his performance in the Whitney was a dominating performance,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “Even more importantly than that, he set a track record at a venue like Saratoga, where they’ve been running a mile-and-an-eighth for a long time. To be the first horse to ever break 1:47 flat there really stands out as what I felt was the strongest performance by any older horse in the country for the year.”
Pletcher said Lawyer Ron was equally impressive during an 81⁄4-length victory in the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga in his subsequent start. Lawyer Ron also won the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in his second start of the season.
