It takes only one word to describe Ginger Punch’s 2007 season: consistent.
The five-year-old Awesome Again mare hit the board in each of her eight starts with five victories, including four in graded stakes.
“She gives her all every time she steps out on the track,” Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel said. “She was so strong when she broke her maiden that we knew she had a lot of potential. What we didn’t know then was that she had a tremendous amount of heart and loved to compete.”
Ginger Punch won her third Grade 1 race of the season as she gamely fought off the determined challenge of Hystericalady through the length of the stretch to prevail by a neck in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) on October 27 at Monmouth Park.
She also scored consecutive victories in the First Flight (G2), Go for Wand (G1), and Ruffian (G1) Handicaps.
“We thought going in that she could have a really good season, maybe win a Grade 1 and get to the Breeders’ Cup,” Frankel said. “I don’t think you ever expect a horse to have the type of season that she had. There’s just too many other good horses out there.”
