Frank Stronach’s Adena Springs did not just lead all North American breeders in 2007. It dominated the competition.
Horses bred by Adena Springs made more money, won more races, and captured more stakes and graded stakes races than any other breeding operation, leading to Adena’s fourth consecutive Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder and it’s fifth since 2000.
Stronach, 75, an Austrian-born self-made billionaire, purchased his first claimer for $700 in the mid-1960s. He is the founder and chairman of Toronto-based Magna International Inc., and guides one of the world’s most prolific racing and breeding operations.
Stronach’s racing operation, Stronach Stables, also was named a finalist for this year’s Eclipse Award as outstanding owner, which he won each year from 1998-2000.
Horses bred by Adena Springs at one of its three farms in Kentucky, Florida, and Canada amassed $18,005,772 in earnings during the 2007 season, more than $10-million more than the $7,903,286 earned by the second-ranked breeding operation, Sez Who Thoroughbreds.
Adena bred the winners of 538 races from 3,482 starts.
