Two scratched from Kentucky Oaks future wagering

Posted: Wednesday, February 06, 2008 6:05 PM

Kentucky Oaks (G1) future pool wagering has been suspended on By the Light and Sea Chanter.

Jay Em Ess Stable’s By the Light and Stonerside Stable’s Sea Chanter are not expected to run in the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks, a 1 1/8-mile race for three-year-old fillies on May 2 at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Grade 3 winner Sea Chanter will be pointed toward a summer campaign on turf. The War Chant filly is currently not in training.

“We decided to freshen her up and focus on a summer turf program,” Pletcher said. “We’re just giving her some time off.”

Multiple stakes winner By the Light, a Malibu Moon filly who is unbeaten in four career starts, was knocked out of Oaks contention by an ankle injury that is expected to require surgery.

Richard Dutrow Jr. trains By the Light, the winner of the 2007 New York Breeders’ Futurity and Boyd Gaming’s Delta Princess Powered by Youbet.com and Lady Finger Stakes.

The departure of By the Light and Sea Chanter leaves the first of three pools in the Kentucky Oaks future wager with 22 betting interests, including 21 individual horses and a mutuel field that includes all other three-year-old fillies.

Betting on pool one of the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) future wagers starts Thursday at noon EST. Pool one wagering on the Kentucky Derby continues through Sunday at 6 p.m., with Kentucky Oaks wagering closing 30 minutes later.

Pool two of both wagers will be held March 6-9. Pool three will take place from April 3-6.

Both wagers are $2 minimum bets, and are win bets only. No refunds will be offered, and winning payouts will be based on odds at the close of each pool.

Current odds can be accessed at www.kentuckyderby.com and www.kentuckyoaks.com.
