Fairmount Park increases mount fees

Posted: Wednesday, August 13, 2008 1:11 PM

The Illinois Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association on Wednesday increased mount fees for jockeys riding at Fairmount Park.

Riders at the Collinsville, Illinois, racetrack received a $10 increase to $55 for losing mounts in races for purses under $10,000, which make up the majority of the races run at the facility. Third-place finishers at the same level will receive an additional $5, increasing their fee to $60.

“The jockeys at Fairmount Park were courteous and understanding of the horsemen’s concerns about the health of the industry at Fairmount Park,” Jockeys' Guild regional manager Jeff Johnston said. “The fees are still outdated but we want to work with the horsemen to better the industry of southern Illinois.”

Fairmount Park slashed its race dates in 2008, citing increased competition from six nearby casinos. The track is currently conducting a 60-day meet after racing 89 days 2007.

“I want to thank the HBPA Board for their recognition that jockeys were due an increase and chief steward Jeff Bowen for his help in reaching this agreement at a difficult time for racing in southern Illinois,” Jockey’s Guild national manager Terry Meyocks said. “The Fairmount Park jockeys are grateful for this increase and look forward to working with the industry in southern Illinois to improve racing in that area.”

Meyocks also noted that the Jockey Club is working toward a model mount fee scale based on factors including purse size.

Fairmount Park joins fellow Illinois racetracks Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course in raising mount fees for their riders. Other racetracks that recently have increased their mount fees include Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Saratoga Race Course, Calder Race Course, Philadelphia Park, and Hoosier Park.
