Courtney Jr. to operate Stonebridge Farm

Posted: Monday, April 14, 2008 6:07 PM

Robert Courtney Jr., who was an integral part of the Crestfield Farm team for 31 years, will continue to raise and sell Thoroughbreds at his 195-acre Stonebridge Farm in Lexington.

Courtney Jr. will continue to represent both client and partnership horses with consignments at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton sales.

Robert Courtney Sr., who bought his first horse in 1941, retired after the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.

“The business has been good to my family and I want to continue to raise and sell good, honest horses,” Courtney Jr. said.  “I have approached this business with a hands-on philosophy, and I feel that if you take care of the horse, it will take care of you.

“I have raised five champions since I started with my father in the late 70s, and the work ethic he instilled in me has served me well.”

Courtney Jr. has served as president of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers Club and a trustee of Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. A United States Army veteran, Courtney Jr. also served as a director of Thoroughbred Club of America and a trustee of Sayre School in Lexington.
