Churchill Downs bans toe grabs at all its tracks

Churchill Downs Inc. implemented a new horseshoe policy and banned toe grabs longer than two millimeters at all four of its tracks on Tuesday.

The new policy bans all toe grabs, bends, jar calks, stickers, and any other traction device worn on a horse’s front shoes. Also, all hind shoes with a turndown of more than one quarter of an inch will be banned on dirt tracks.

The policy will go into effect immediately at Churchill Downs, Calder Race Course, Arlington Park, and Fair Grounds.

“Our change in policy is another positive step toward improving the welfare and safety of our equine and human athletes and it’s consistent with the recommendations of The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Safety Committee, [the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association’s] Thoroughbred Action Committee, and the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to address safety in horse racing,” said Donnie Richardson, senior vice president of racing for Churchill Downs Inc.
