Mountaineer workers to go on strike

Approximately 200 employees at Mountaineer Race Track will go on strike beginning at midnight EDT on Saturday.

On Tuesday Local 23 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, which represents the cashiers, slot technicians, and money room employees at the Chester, West Virginia, track, rejected an offier from the track, Pittsburg Post-Gazette reported.

Secretary Treasurer Tony Helfer told the Post-Gazette that many workers earn “poverty wages or worse” and affordable health care is unavailable.

Mountaineer attorney Marshall Berman said the company feels its offer is fair.

The racetrack and casino are expected to operate as usual, with supervisors, managers, and other employees covering shifts, if the workers strike.
