George, former Ohio HBPA president, dies

Gus George, a Thoroughbred owner and breeder and former president of the Ohio Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, died on Monday at his home in Sunbury, Ohio. He was 77.

George served as Ohio HBPA president from 2000-'05. Horses trained by George have earned 158 victories since 1976 and compiled $725,728 in purse earnings.

Thistledown Track Chaplain Vincent Harris said a celebration of George’s life is planned for early April in the Columbus, Ohio, area. More details will be released at a later date.
