Valenzuela’s Hall of Fame ceremony to be held in California

Retired jockey Ismael “Milo” Valenzuela will receive a jacket and plaque from the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on Sunday in a special induction ceremony at Santa Anita Park.

Valenzuela, the regular rider for five-time Horse of the Year Kelso, is unable to travel to Saratoga Springs, New York, for the Racing Hall of Fame induction ceremony on August 4. National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame President Stella F. Thayer approved a proposal to induct the 73-year-old Valenzuela near his home in Arcadia, California.

Valenzuela’s ceremony will mark the first time that an induction has taken place outside of Saratoga Springs since the National Museum of Racing trustees formed the Hall of Fame in 1955. The Hall of Fame’s historic review committee elected Valenzuela to the Hall of Fame in March.

A reception for Valenzuela will be held at Santa Anita from 7-to10 p.m. PDT in the Chandelier Room located in the Turf Club. National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame trustee Beverly Lewis will present Valenzuela with his jacket and plaque.

Retired Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. also is scheduled to take part in the ceremony, which will include a video of Valenzuela’s career highlights.

Valenzuela earned 2,545 wins and compiled $20,122,760 in purse money during a riding career that began in 1951 and concluded in ’80. He earned 22 wins in 35 starts aboard Kelso, including 19 stakes races.

Valenzuela twice won the Kentucky Derby for Calumet Farm. He earned his first Derby win in 1958 aboard Tim Tam and repeated the feat in 1968, when Forward Pass was declared the winner after Dancer’s Image was disqualified.
