Transformer fire forces temporary evacuation at Belmont

Belmont Park was temporarily evacuated on Saturday morning after a transformer fire broke out in the basement of the Elmont, New York, track.

The track reopened at approximately 11:15 a.m. EDT. Fans received free general admission and free general parking for a ten-race card that began as scheduled at 1 p.m.

The grandstand is off limits to the public. Dining operations were also interrupted on Saturday.

The grandstand will also be closed on Sunday, the final day of Belmont’s spring-summer meet. Free admission, free preferred parking, and limited food service will be offered on Sunday.

The transformer replacement and other repair work will be conducted while live racing is run at Saratoga Race Course, which opens a 36-day meeting on Wednesday.
