Hollywood Park’s average attendance, mutuel handle down

Hollywood Park concluded a 60-day live meet on Sunday with decreases in attendance and mutuel handle compared to last year’s track record-setting meet.

The Inglewood, California, track reported an average daily on-track attendance of 6,063 fans. That figure is a 5.9% decrease compared to last year’s on-track average of 6,443 that was recorded during a 63-day meet.

After generating the highest daily total mutuel handle in track history last year, averaging $11,996,243 per day, the figure declined 1.8% to $11,783,585. The on-track average daily mutuel handle declined 9.7% from $1,697,597 last year to $1,532,940.

“The tracks across the country have struggled to maintain their 2007 averages,” Track President Jack Liebau said. “We were up against record figures and I think we did as well as we could have hoped in these tough economic times.”

Advance deposit wagering increased 14.6% to an average of $2,132,108 per day. Advance deposit wagering averaged $1,860,758 per day during last year’s meet.

Liebau attributed the improved figures to contract disputes slowing the implementation of advanced deposit wagering across North America, including at Churchill Downs, Calder Race Course, Lone Star Park, and Ellis Park, which resulted in the track’s brief closure.

“Account wagering on races at Hollywood Park no doubt benefited from the standoff between TrackNet and the Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Group because other signals were not available to account wagering providers,” Liebau said.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano, who shifted his tack to southern California last year, finished with 56 wins to earn his first Hollywood riding title. John Sadler led all trainers with 30 wins. Everest Stables was the leading owner with 14 wins.

Multiple Grade 1 winner Zenyatta was voted horse of the meet in a media poll. The Street Cry (Ire) filly, who is unbeaten in six career starts, earned consecutive wins at Hollywood in the Vanity (G1) and Milady (G2) Handicaps.
