Equine surgeon Richardson to speak at Hall of Fame induction
Dean Richardson, D.V.M., the equine orthopedic surgeon who treated 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Barbaro, will be the guest speaker at the National Museum of Racing's 2008 Hall of Fame induction ceremony on August 4 in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Richardson is the Charles W. Raker Professor of Equine Surgery and the chief of large animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital at New Bolton Center. He performed surgery to repair the bones in Barbaro’s shattered right hind leg following the Dynaformer colt's breakdown in the 2006 Preakness Stakes (G1). For the eight months following the procedure, Richardson kept the public up to date on Barbaro's treatment, successes, and setbacks, right up to the classic winner's death in late January 2007.
The induction ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. EDT at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion.
