Thoroughbred owner James H. Stone dead

James H. Stone, who owned multiple Grade 1 and dual classic-placed winner Menifee in partnership with Arthur Hancock III, died on Monday. He was 82.

The chief executive officer of Stone Energy Corp. until his death, Stone was a decorated Marine officer who also owned Grade 2 winner Chamrousse in partnership with Hancock.

“Jimmy was a great friend and partner. Our relationship spanned decades,” Hancock said. “When I was a child, Jimmy took me to the window and helped me make my first bet at Keeneland [Race Course]. In 1999, we won the [Toyota] Blue Grass Stakes [G1] together with Menifee.

“Things go full circle. Jimmy Stone was an astute horseman who was passionate about the game. He will be greatly missed.”

Menifee was retired from racing in 1999 with five wins in 11 starts and $1,732,000 in earnings. The Harlan horse also won the ’99 Haskell Invitational Handicap (G1) and earned consecutive runner-up finishes to Charismatic in the ’99 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1).

Chamrousse won the 2002 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2). The Peaks and Valleys mare concluded her racing career in 2004 with four wins in 17 starts and $359,585 in earnings.

Stone had lived in New Orleans since 1981. He was a director of Hibernia National Bank in New Orleans and Newpark Resources, an oilfield service company in Houston.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Toys for Tots Foundation, P.O. Box 1947, Quantico, Virginia, 22134, or the National World War II Museum, 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, 70130.
