Modified casino amendment advances to Kentucky House floor

After failing on Tuesday to pass one version of an amendment allowing casinos in Kentucky, the state's House Elections, Constitutional Amendments, and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee passed a second version of the amendment, opposed by leaders of Kentucky's racing industry, on Wednesday.

The committee voted 7-2 to send the amendment to the floor of the state's House of Representatives for a full vote. The amendment would allow nine casinos of which as many as five "may" be at horse racetracks, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

Tuesday's committee vote against the first version effectively ended the horse industry's pursuit of casinos in the state for this session. Language in the first version of the amendment allowed five casino licenses for racetracks.
