Breeders’ Cup to create also-eligible lists
For the first time, Breeders’ Cup Ltd. will create also-eligible lists for races in this year’s World Championships program that oversubscribe.
A maximum of two horses will be allowed on an also-eligible list for a Breeders Cup race.
The Breeders’ Cup expanded the World Championships to 14 races this year for the two-day card at Santa Anita Park on October 24 and 25. The Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf will be limited to 12 starters, and the other 11 races, including all eight Grade 1 events, will be capped at 14 starters.
“Our goal is to have as many full fields as possible for the Championships races,” Breeders’ Cup President Greg Avioli said. “Establishing also-eligible lists increases the opportunity to give as many top-quality horses a chance to compete [in a World Championship race] and offers fans greater wagering value.”
The horses on an also-eligible list would be chosen from a ranked preference order determined at pre-entry stage by a panel of racing secretaries.
A horse would move from the also-eligible list into the main body of the field in the event a defection occurs after the post-position draw on October 21 until 7 a.m. PDT on October 24, the scratch time for both Championships days. No horse will be allowed to move into a Championship race on either card after scratch time.
