Del Mar to reduce purses beginning August 13
Del Mar will reduce purses by 3.5% for the remainder of the summer meet, beginning August 13.
The cut will amount to a reduction of about $10,000 per day according to Michael Ernst, the track’s chief financial officer. The purse reduction is the first in more than 30 years at the seaside track.
During a press conference on Friday, track officials said the cut was triggered by decreased on-track handle and account-wagering revenue. Del Mar was unable to reach an agreement with Santa Anita Park and Hollywood Park for an account-wagering experiment.
“Had we got that accomplished we would not be having this conversation,” Ernst said.
Purses for the Del Mar Oaks (G1) and Del Mar Derby (G2) each will be cut by $50,000. Also, purses for the Solana Beach Handicap, El Cajon Stakes, and Torrey Pines Stakes each will be reduced by $25,000.
