Injury knocks Sedgefield out of Belmont Stakes

Posted: Wednesday, May 30, 2007 1:52 PM

Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) fifth-place finisher Sedgefield will miss the Belmont Stakes (G1) after trainer Darrin Miller detected a chip in the colt’s left front ankle after a workout on Monday at Churchill Downs.

Miller said on Wednesday that that injury will require surgery to remove the chip. Sedgefield’s surgery is scheduled for Monday at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

“The prognosis is good,” Miller said. “It’s unfortunate, but I think he’ll be all right.”

Sedgefield, second to Hard Spun in the Lane’s End Stakes (G2) at Turfway Park, finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby in his first start on dirt. He also finished second in the Tropical Park Derby (G3) at Calder Race Course and Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Owned by Silverton Hill, Sedgefield has won two of nine career starts and earned $240,093.
