Arlington jockeys, horsemen to discuss mount fees

Jockeys and horsemen based at Arlington Park plan to meet Friday to discuss a new structure of mount fees requested by riders.

Jockeys’ Guild Midwest Regional Manager Jeff Johnston said jockeys at Arlington have submitted a mount fee schedule to the racing secretary, stewards, and the Illinois Racing Board. The current plan would allow each rider, as an independent contractor, to set his own mount fee.

Johnston said a 1985 fee structure called for $35 a mount. Under the new proposal, some riders are requesting up to $80 a mount. The requested rates are listed on the schedule turned into the racing secretary but Johnston said a standard rate could still be arranged.

Horsemen representatives and the Illinois Racing Board did not immediately return phone calls from Thoroughbred Times.

Increasing mount fees is a priority of the Jockeys’ Guild.
