Prominent Illinois owner Sidney Port dead at 96

Chicago Thoroughbred owner Sidney Port, part owner of Grade/Group 1 winner Ballingarry (Ire) and Grade 2 winner Toasted, died Monday. He was 96.

Port, the founder of Des Plaines, Illinois-based Lawson Products, was a generous philanthropist, successful entrepreneur, avid sportsman, and a longtime supporter of Arlington Park.

Ballingarry captured back-to-back renewals of the Stars and Stripes Breeders’ Cup Turf Handicap (G3) in 2003 and ’04. He also won the 2001 Criterium de Saint Cloud (Fr-G1) and the ’02 Canadian International Stakes (Can-G1).

Toasted, who won the $100,000 Russell L. Reineman Illinois Owners Stakes on May 5, won the 2004 Arlington Classic Stakes (G2).

Born March 11, 1911, at his parents’ Antlers Hotel in downtown Chicago, Port earned a law degree at DePaul University during the Great Depression, worked in his father-in-law’s auto parts distribution business, and eventually started his own business repairing machine parts.

In 1970, he took Lawson Products public. It generated $518-million in revenue last year.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. CDT on Thursday at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Road in Glencoe, Illinois. Internment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in his honor be made to the charity of the giver’s choice.
