Wood End Farms opens a training pool in Chicago suburbs

Horse owners in the Chicago area will have a new therapy option with the opening of an equine swimming pool at Wood End Farms in Barrington, Illinois.

“Swimming provides good cardiovascular exercise without concussion on the limbs,” Steven Seabaugh of Merritt & Associates Equine Hospital said. “In particular, swimming is a good way to keep horses with soft tissues injuries fit without straining the injured leg.”

The specially designed pool measures 45 feet in diameter, is 12 feet deep, and holds more than 140,000 gallons of water. A gradual entry ramp with non-skid footing and a terraced entry/exit point provides a safe environment with easy access to the pool for equine swimmers.

“Swimming horses, even those that don’t have soundness problems, is essential good conditioning as it builds muscle and endurance, with virtually no stress to the horse’s limbs,” said Leslie Parrish, manager of Wood End. “And swimming is the cornerstone of our layup program.

"We also offer season passes for those who wish to bring their horses in an ongoing basis for swims.” She also notes that incorporating swimming into a horse’s regular conditioning program builds overall fitness quickly without risking injury.”

Wood End Farms was founded in 2004 and is a non-profit organization that specializes in the care and training of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses.
